The Perfect Barn Venue: Drovers Rest Farm
Just a stone’s throw from Hay-on-Wye, Drovers Rest Farm is a gem of a relaxed, family-run wedding venue in Herefordshire. With its rustic charm and stunning views, it was the ideal spot for a wedding at any time of the year. The farm's natural beauty made for a spectacular backdrop as friends and family gathered to celebrate Hannah and Al’s love story that started brewing (literally) around the Covid lockdown.
When I first met Hannah and Al to discuss their wedding flowers, they asked me to create joyful, fun arrangements with bright pinks and oranges. From that, my goal was clear: vibrant colours and personal touches. Big, bold arrangements in vibrant oranges and lush pinks everywhere! The couple enjoyed brewing their own beer during lockdown, so it seemed a great idea to add some hops to their flowers.
I dried and nurtured some Herefordshire-grown hops for them, as they are only in season in late summer/early autumn. It felt right to add some grasses in the design too, creating a fun mixture of dried summer/autumnal elements and fresh spring flowers and foliage. The added forget-me-nots held personal meaning for the family.
For the ceremony, Al fabricated the triangle arch himself (it turned out absolutely beautiful), which was then dressed with clusters of flowers, using hay bales, rugs, and fabrics to add an extra element to the styling. We used brick molds for the base of the meadow arrangements that beautifully decorated the aisle and registrar table.
As sustainability and conscious-minded design are important parts of our ethos, we repurposed all the arrangements for the reception afterward. The aisle meadows became table centres, and the arch surrounded the couple at the top table. The couple added colourful candles and personal touches to make the tables look even more flamboyant.
Let me mention a few things I love about the venue. Drovers Rest is a 16th-century organic farm, peacefully nestled in the Herefordshire countryside, surrounded by 40 acres of forest, fields, and farmland. Their signature South African feasts for each of their weddings are absolutely amazing! Picture open fire, meat, and vegetables cooked in a unique way right in front of your guests. The atmosphere is relaxed, family-friendly, and the team makes you feel right at home. We tasted some of the most amazing arancini and shared a stunning outdoor breakfast with the team.
As a wedding florist, the most amazing feeling is when you are perfectly in sync with the couple and everyone else who contributes to making their day one of the best ones of their lives together! I feel lucky that I can be one of Drovers Rest’s recommended suppliers, and we share the same passion and love for helping to create unforgettable memories and moments full of joy!
